In Case Of Camping, Emergency, Or Disaster – Carry Your Portable Water Purifiers
Posted by: Chris Channing In: General
During the summer, almost everyone loves to pack up and head for the mountains for a weekend camping getaway. This fun event is always highlighted by hiking and fishing and wildlife sightseeing. But there is one thing that you shouldn’t forget to bring, your portable water purifiers. No matter how well you pack and prepare for your trip, it seems that once you get to your destination, you have forgotten something. That’s because there is so much to bring. But these days, it is possible to leave the 100 gallons of drinking water at home, and get potable water from the stream, river, or lake that is closest to your campsite by using a water purifier. Natural running rivers and streams can be contaminated with harmful agricultural byproducts such as pesticides and herbicides. These types of runoffs can also contain contaminated water from pollution associated with animal waste or dead animals. This type of contamination usually leads to harmful pathogens like bacteria and parasitic worms. Depending on location, natural waters can also contain high levels of mercury or lead. One of the easiest methods to purify water is by boiling it. Many pathogens like bacteria and viruses can be killed by the high temperature of boiling water. Depending upon the elevation, the effective boiling time may have to be increased due to the change in the boiling point of water at different altitudes. Boiling will not remove harmful chemicals or toxic metals. Another easy method of water purification is to allow the sun to do it with its ultraviolet or uv rays. If you isolate some water in a clear container, and if the water is not cloudy, the uv rays will harm the pathogens in the water so that they cannot survive. Again this method does not remove chemicals or metals. Some of the newest portable water purification systems utilize filtration technology to remove pathogens, chemicals, and harmful metals. These filter types can even by purchased to handle much larger volumes for sterilized water stockpiling. Portable water purifiers would make an excellent accessory to any set of camping or hiking gear. An added feature of these devices is that they would also come in handy in the case of an emergency or disaster that causes the local water supplies to be harmful. You get easily fetch the purifier out of your camping gear and be able to have clean and sterilized water even in emergency conditions.
