Making Toys For Kids Using Paper Folding

Posted by: Aya Nagase In: General

The art of creating objects out of paper was first developed by the Japanese people way back when kids had no toys to play with. The art was very popular centuries back and still thrives in schools and homes today.

Rather than having plastic toys and games to play with, kids back then would learn to create their very own with just a plain piece of white or colored paper (or perhaps a combination of both). They obviously did not have the luxuries that kids have nowadays.

By getting your kids interested in this art form of paper manipulation, you help them unleash their curious and creative side. Origami can be a fantastic way of teaching your kids determination as it takes time to become good at it.

For kids that do not like to draw or paint, it is an even better reason to get them onto Origami. The art of creating simple objects out of paper doesn’t require a lot of talent, although creating really complicated objects (for more advanced skill levels) can be quite challenging.

Find books on Origami for children, and your kids will have an extensive time following along with the simple diagrams described within the book, creating all sorts of toys that they can either play with or put on display.

Don’t worry about it being difficult to do. Origami can be as easy or as difficult as you make it. Naturally, to get good at a skill requires patience and time, which is something great for your kids to understand.

It would be for the best if you joined in the fun and taught your kids how to fold these fun objects, as they would gain so much more if the experience was interactive. Show them slowly, one step at a time starting with very easy to make items such as a kite, or a basic flower, then progress from there. It would be beneficial to not help them make these items as that would just take away the self-satisfaction they would get upon finishing the project without your help.

Let your kids know that it will require dedication in order to become skillful with Origami just like everything else in life, and tenacity is the answer to building a wonderful paper toy. You will discover that kids enjoy learning what you will want to teach them, even if it means doing it over and over again.
